So the PrE3 discussion continues. I’m talking about more software tonight, and I have to say that I find it interesting that so many trailers and announcements are being made mere days before E3 actually begins. One of which was actually made tonight, just in time for me to blog about it.
Milo

Ok, so I already briefly talked about Milo in Part 1 of my PrE3 discussion. But I’d like to discuss it a little more in depth. Now, Milo could be one of three things. It could be a commercial success, providing innovation and intuitiveness for many generations of gaming to come. It could also instead be the biggest bomb of all time, disappointing many because it is only capable of what Molyneux shows us in the trailor. But regardless of either of those, it could also be the first step in a bleak, artificially intelligent future where humanity is enslaved by their tv screens, physically on top of metaphorically. Seriously, if Milo is truly capable of taking a drawing from your hand and hold a conversation with you, we’re either in for something awesome, or deadly. I’m excited.
Metroid: Other M

I’m hardly a hardcore follower of the Metroid series, but I do like it. Metroid Prime is easily in my top 5 shooters out there, and the 2D stuff holds my attention well enough. But Other M, the latest title in the bacterium infested world of Samus Aran looks like another fresh take on an old classic. Similar to when the series first made the big jump to 3D. The only question is will the jump into Action/Adventure be as smooth? It’s safe to trust in Team Ninja, as they’ve already delivered solid product in the Ninja Gaiden series. Let’s just hope Other M is actually beatable, unlike their already established Ninja series.
Silent Hill 6?

I was already hoping for the next Silent Hill title to grace the floors of E3. Much to my excitement, Konami’s hit horror genre will be appearing this year. A teaser trailer has already been revealed in a closed off theatre. All we have to go off of until E3 is reports of what happens in the trailer, which isn’t much I’m afraid. You can’t truly appreciate a trailer until viewing it yourself, but I have high hopes. I haven’t had the pleasure to play Shattered Memories or Origins yet, but I’ve played all the rest. Despite my huge appreciation of Homecoming, I would like to see the series revisit the cult of the Order more in depth again. And I don’t want any more Pyramid fan service. Something that makes the series so great is its psychology and monster interpretation. Using Pyramid Head and ugly axe-headed enemies when they’ve got nothing to do with Alex’s nightmares doesn’t make for good psychological enemy development. Either way, I love Silent Hill as a series, so I can’t wait to see what’s next.
Rock Band Keyboard Peripheral

I’m glad that Harmonix gave into all of my complaining, because ever since the original Rock Band was first announced, I’ve wanted a keyboard peripheral. Especially when Beatles Rock Band allowed for three vocalists, but still no keyboard. Well my prayers have hopefully been answered. I say hopefully because even though we finally have the keyboard playability, I’ve heard rumors that it will be in the form of a “Keytar”. Meaning a guitar with keyboard keys on it, or a holdable accordion. I don’t think I would enjoy playing a keyboard if it’s hanging off my hips. I play keyboard in real life, and since many rock bands use them, I’ve always hoped of being able to sit down at a feux-keyboard and jam to Aerosmith. Aside from the physical peripheral, the only question left is what are they’re gonna do with the Rock Band 1 and 2 songs? Will they add a keyboard part to it? Or leave them on the wayside?
Arkham Asylum 2

Superhero games generally get a bad rep. The superhero lifestyle just doesn’t seem to be translated well in a video game environment. This was not true for Batman: Arkham Asylum. I loved its gritty look, its plot, and a great, fresh take on all of the characters (Harley Quinn in particular). My only major problems with it were the lack of villains after all the hype, its few-and-far-between boss battles, and how easy it was to defeat the enemies. But hopefully B:AA2 will bring with it even more villains. The teaser at the end of the first shows that Scarecrow, Killer Croc, Bane, or any combination of the three are still out there. There’s still a plethora of great villains that can show up, both familiar and the kind that only hardcore comic book geeks would recognize (like Mr. Zsasz). Hopefully the Riddler actually shows up instead of just leaving random questions marks everywhere in a disembodied manner.
Mortal Kombat 9

The teaser trailer for this just came out today. Did you watch it yet? Go watch it. Now. I’m serious go. Did you watch it? Good. Ok, so I’m pretty pumped for this, surprisingly. Mortal Kombat to me has been slowly dying as a series ever since MK5. I don’t know what happened, but Midway just stopped creating interesting characters. I mean sure, the occasional new character catches my eye, but I can probably count them on one hand (Li Mei, Bo Rai Cho, Kenshi, Hotaru). Deception was the only one since MK4 that I actually enjoyed despite its lack of good, original characters. But aside from Zombie Liu Kang and the schizophrenic hybrid Noob/Smoke, they brought back awesome characters like Mileena, Baraka, Cindel, Jade, Kabal, etc. Weapons, knock-off stages, stage fatalities, Hara-Kiri, Deception knew how to make a good Mortal Kombat. Deadly Alliance, Armaggedon, and Vs. D.C. did not. One fatality per character? Removal of fatalities entirely? Facing off against Superman? Come on Midway. They have promised MK9 will be different, or more directed towards its roots, and stupid characters like Hsu Hao will never return. So considering the fact that not a single new character or post-MK3 character is in the trailer, I’d say it’s actually got a chance.
New Hero?

From the sounds of it, DJ Hero 2 has already been confirmed, as well as Guitar Hero: Legends of Rock. But I’m wondering if any more Hero titles will be announced this year. GH:LoR looks interesting to say the least. I have a feeling Guitar Hero is getting desperate as a series. I don’t really play Guitar Hero ever since World Tour blatantly copied Rock Band, and I’ve already talked about how I feel about blatant copy in the video game world with Playstation Move. Though I guess when Rock Band came out, Guitar Hero didn’t have much choice, but they still could have made it different. Sorry, I’m rambling. Anyway, I’m not quite sure I understand the concept of Legends of Rock, why are we turning into rabid beasts? And why does this pertain to the enjoyment of music? I guess we’ll see what Neversoft has to offer. As for DJ Hero, while many found the turntable peripheral gimmicky and forgettable, I was shocked to find it kinda fun. I can see how others would find it a tad repetitive though. I’m interested to see what kind of changes they’ll have to offer for the sequel though.
Wii Vitality Sensor Titles

Ok, so this may be classified under my previous article on the Vitality Sensor, but I’m more curious as to if they’ll be adding another entry to their Wii Games line, meaning Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Music, Wii Fit. and Wii Sports Resort. With the balance board came Wii Fit, an entire game of mini-games dedicated to the use of that peripheral. Perhaps the Vitality Sensor will too. It’s harder to imagine such a thing considering you don’t actually play with the Vitality Sensor. You just pop it on and hope for the best. But whether it’s in the Wii Games lineup, or other original titles, my curiosity can’t help but get me excited to see what Nintendo has to offer.
That’s all for tonight. Tomorrow will be my last PrE3 blog entry, and I’ll be discussing titles that haven’t necessarily been officially announced, but are titles I’m hoping to see there, no matter how hopeless some of those wishes may be. Keep reading!
